Engaging and fair magic puzzler, January 6, 2023
by Lance Cirone (Backwater, Vermont)

Suveh Nux lets you work out what it's all about just by experimentation. Once I got my book, I started off by typing all the spell names. Then I charted down their effects, and what happened if I used them more than once. This just led to more ideas with what I could do, and it feels rewarding to keep trying and learning new spells. There's a small aspect that confused me, and it was (Spoiler - click to show)the ANI effect. I noticed that some of my effects were delayed, but I thought it was a method to make my next spells immediately more powerful; like maybe it would be better than casting it multiple times in a row? Still, the game has a useful hint system, and is loaded with Easter eggs. Try everything you can, and even if you don't, it's still a fun game.

Dimenticabile, November 1, 2022

Non mi ha convinto granché, per via dell'esiguo numero di enigmi e della mancanza di trama. Il sistema degli incantesimi è molto originale, questo sì, però viene presto a noia e diventa ripetitivo. Un paio d'ore che non lasceranno traccia.

My brain hurts, February 14, 2022
by Cody Gaisser (Florence, Alabama, United States of America, North America, Earth, Solar System, Milky Way, Known Universe, ???)

Suveh Nux is an escape room game with a very creative system of magical language and plenty of personality. I'm giving this game the benefit of the doubt because other people seem to not have bounced off of it as hard as I did. Maybe my brain isn't as sharp as it used to be, but I didn't find this as easy and intuitive as most other players seem to. Even when I was on the right track, I was at a loss for how to make the timing bits go off the way they were supposed to. After about an hour of (Spoiler - click to show)trying to put more than a light crack in the door, I threw my hands up and consulted a walkthrough. I had fun with this game when I was learning its rules and solving its puzzles. I stopped having fun when I couldn't figure out how to time the solution of the main puzzle because I didn't comprehend how the timing and intensity of spells related. Maybe the problem is me?

Quick play with fun puzzles, October 16, 2020

Spent an hour or two solving the delightful little puzzles. A progress indicator lets you know you're doing a good job unpacking the interesting magical mechanics, an ancient counting system, and a sneaky little beastie.

I held back from five stars for two reasons: I wish there were a bit more story or character to it, and I got stuck for twenty or thirty minutes on a parser issue. (I played back in the 90s, but maybe only one parser game since then... so I'm a touch rusty.)

Very good, but not my cuppa..., December 6, 2019
by Rovarsson (Belgium)
Related reviews: Puzzler, Fantasy

When browsing recommended lists and best of lists, Suveh Nux springs up frequently, so I decided to play it.

I can only agree with other reviewers that this is an excellent puzzle-game. Everything works, there's more than one "Aha!"-moment, and there are almost limitless possibilities to experiment, combine stuff and spells and stand in wonder at the results of the latest whim you acted upon.

I loved the brain excercise of solving the logic/language puzzle. The game is a great cerebral A-implies-B problemsolving excercise, with a very big sandbox.

Personally, I like a bit more involvement, the feeling that there's something bigger at stake, but that's just me.

The best IF game I ever played!, July 6, 2019
by simuloid (Ann Arbor, Michigan)

I love everything about this game. It's length is perfect for me; I am a deliberate player and was able to finish it in an hour while taking notes. The puzzles are challenging without being hard, and importantly all of them had clues in the game to help solve them. The material was all thematic, I found the game very immersive. I felt rewarded by the ending.
Despite being a One-Room Game, there is plenty to do with lots of Easter eggs, so there's even room to replay and try just fooling around.

A vault, an apprantice and a mysterious spell book. What else do you need for a good adventure?

Played it in a single evening and had lot's of fun with it. Took notes for all the words and their meaning, figured out what needs to be combined... Ahhh, it was a little bit like back in the 80s ...

An escape game mixed with a language puzzle, February 3, 2016
by MathBrush
Related reviews: about 2 hours

Suveh Nux is a great game. It is a mid-length one-room fantasy game where you have to learn a magical language to escape a vault. You have to learn the grammer, the vocabulary, and some numbers.

One things that makes this game fun that I didn't appreciate when I first played IF is that EVERYTHING is implemented. Anything you think you could do with the spells, you can do. You can destroy everything in the room. There are 5 or more subpuzzles that you can completely miss without the author's note at the end.

I haven't gone back to revisit the game in years, because learning the language is much of the attraction, and it wouldn't be as hard this time. But I definitely recommend the game to everyone.

Rewarding Experimentation, May 21, 2013
by Andromache (Hawaii)

Okay, I confess. I needed the hints. I was on the right track, but math really isn't my forte. I see numbers and my brain gets confused and I become intimidated. But don't let that deter you, if you're like me. The game is not all about math.

This game was fun. Absolutely a joy. Learning the magical language was a snap, and most puzzles except the numerical one were totally intuitive. I spent a lot of the game not even worried about getting out - just trying things to see how far I could push conditions before I died. And you can die, but it's very easy to undo and carry on. Puzzles are so well-clued and I felt a real sense of accomplishment solving the ones I managed to do on my own. Well worth my time.

Highly satisfying short play, September 11, 2012
by Kim Ahmad (Toronto, Canada)

Although it often feels like one-room escape games have been done to death, every so often an original take on the idea comes along, and this is such an original take. The puzzling is fun and, for me at least, hit the sweet spot of feeling just challenging enough, but not at all frustrating. Mastering the commands was surprisingly satisfying. I can't really think of anything to fault the game for, except perhaps the maddening nature of wondering where that last 5% of the score could have come from! Also worth noting: there is a fair bit of intricate non-dictionary typing in this game, so it may not be ideally suited to some alternative input methods.

An absolute gem!, September 3, 2012
by Dida

Suveh Nux is a true gem and my favorite IF game to date! The game is short, simple and uncluttered. It uses a good system of magic, teases the brain a little and entertains nicely. As one of the first IF games I played, I found it a commendable introductory game.

I can't quite put my finger on what I liked best. I reckon the game just made me feel good as I played it. I liked the way the puzzles made me think and though I got frustrated at times, patience and experimentation worked enough for me to not mind. The puzzles were rewarding too. Some could be solved via different methods which I thought was a nice touch.

The magic language was logical and therefore learnable. I loved that because I felt like I was actually learning magic rather than just being told it. Much more fun!

I must say I am very impressed with the way the author has taken such simple ideas and crafted a game that is beautifully done. I can't think of a single thing I dislike about it.

Innovative game, September 7, 2011
by Deboriole (San Diego, CA)
Related reviews: Spells, innovative

I really enjoyed my initial playtime with this game. I had a lot of fun deciphering what magic words meant what, and how I could escape from my trap. Unfortunately, the solution (which I read after an hour of floundering) was a bit more scientific/technical than I had expected. That may not be a bad thing for some, but I have no interest iin that kind of solution -- it was more tedium than fun. Give me a locked door puzzle instead! I also didn't really read anything from the book in the game, which definitely put me at a disadvantage. My eyes glazed over while reading the book (ironic because the entire game is based on reading, I know), so sue me. I guess I am just not a science person.

Don't be put off by the "magic language" aspect...., February 3, 2011

I must say, I was initially put off by this game when I read in reviews that in this game you interact with your environment by learning to communicate in a language it understands. As a semi-relative-newcomer to IF, all I could think was, AGH!! ISN'T THAT ALREADY THE PROBLEM WITH INTERACTIVE FICTION?! DO WE REALLY NEED TO MAKE IT HARDER?!?! However, I found myself continually drawn back to this game with its strange title, and eventually I just had to try it. Casting aside my misgivings, I downloaded the game and began to play. And, I must say, it was well worth it. I was immediately drawn into the story and my fears about the "magic language" were completely dispelled (no pun intended). There were NO endless "guess the verb" sessions as I had feared. Rather, everything needed to solve the puzzle was provided within the game. What a relief not to have to read the author's mind, as seems to be the case with so many other games. All in all, Suveh Nux was a beautifully simple and enjoyable game. I now laugh at my initial hesitation to try it. After completing the game, my only disappointment was that it was over!

alohomora, January 17, 2011
by Aintelligence (Canada)

I've played a lot of one-room puzzles, and most have something completely different to get out. Suveh Nux really utilizes the one room space with some good puzzles with few objects. In fact the player only has four or five objects to deal with while playing the game, most being scraps of paper, but the implementation of those objects is well done, with possibly the best magical system I've really seen.

First thing's first; if you're looking for a story, look elsewhere, but if a good solid puzzle is what you need, this one-room adventure is short, but splendid. I'll admit, when you first find yourself face to face with the puzzle ahead, it seems overwhelming. well, the first few tasks are simple, but once you get into the heart of the game (the magic) things get not so much difficult as confusing. I had to use the hint system because of all the confusing elements which are in the adventure. However, the magic itself is actually rather easy and straightforward, and didn't really prove to be a problem after the beginning.

The whole system was brilliantly implemented so to be smooth and very sleek look to it. The magic worked like a charm wery nicely without any difficulties, and the extra commands made the game extra special. The only thing I can think of that I wish it was is longer. I think it would be very nice to have a longer adventure with this magic, and maybe shed some light on the mysterious intruder...

Excellent Puzzle, December 8, 2009
by tggdan3 (Michigan)

You are locked in a vault while putting something in it for your wizard master, and you must find a way to escape.

Now I'm not the biggest fan of "escape the room" games, with so many on flash, I'd hate to see IF dedicated to it also, but this game more than makes up for it.

First of all, the game includes easter eggs to find, adding to replay value.

Second, the entire game is about figuring out magic words, and the syntax in which to use them, which is a great puzzle in itself. The puzzles are fair, they make sense, and they're great fun to play with.

That leads to number three. Once you figure out what's going on, there is plenty of fun screwing with everything, and anything you can see can be messed with. On top of that, the game understands so many nonsense commands with funny responses. This game will keep you entertained long after you actually completed it. (And FYI, completing the game does not give you the best score. Playing beforehand does!)

This is a pretty short game, but I don't see that as a problem. The fun of figuring out the system of commands you have to use and the variety of responses you can get from them, on their own, made the game worth playing for me. This is the first game I've played that involves figuring out a grammar for the commands you enter. Very cool.

Solid, Fun, Polished, though maybe too Easy, January 5, 2008
by Victor Gijsbers (The Netherlands)
Related reviews: puzzle, short, linguistic

Suveh Nux is not an ambitious game. Backstory and characterisation are minimal; it is quite short; and all of it takes place in a single, almost bare, room. In this room, the player has to solve a number of puzzles, all of which are based on a linguistic magic system. Figuring out this system is not too hard, though what you can do with it is sometimes less obvious. (I used the hints at one point, though I suppose I might have managed without if I had spent more time on the problem.)

Suveh Nux has a lot going for it. The implementation is impeccable and very polished, making the game a joy to play. The central puzzle is enjoyable, and the progressively harder tasks you are supposed to get done with the magic system are well thought-out. Therefore, I can readily recommend this game.

On the negative side, I can only say that the central puzzle is too easy: I would really have liked to see some more complex grammatical puzzles. Maybe an idea for an extended version?

This gives the game 4 out of 5 stars on an "unambitious IF" scale, which I translate to 3 out of 5 on the scale of all interactive fiction.

I really enjoyed this one. The hints are well-paced, the puzzles make sense, the implementation is sound, and there's lots to play around with.

The only bug I managed to find was a small one which produced a small amount of contradictory output, but it didn't spoil anything. The game did give me an unsolicited hint at one point, but that might have been because I'd just asked it for a few hints in succession, and to be honest I really did need it.

Would definitely recommend this game.

Small, elegant puzzle game, December 23, 2007

A brief, charming game with puzzles centered on a neat magical grammar. The system is well-designed and internally consistent, the puzzles are fun to solve, and there are lots of rewards for experimenting. For the most part the solutions are not too difficult, either, but there's a hint system, just in case.

Not long on story or characterization, but excellent for what it sets out to do.
