I have a preference for IF that's more story-oriented, with intuitive puzzles that grow out of the plot and not just there for the sake of making things difficult. I hate mazes and games that don't let you carry everything you pick up. I also hate games that require you to always get new light sources. I need to identify with the player character or get drawn into the story some other way. I love to explore new settings, poke and prod things, and look at everything.
