I played exclusively Infocom games from the early 90s to the the mid 00s, when I was finally informed about modern IF. I have been extremely pleased with advances in the medium.
My ratings and reviews make a number of assumptions about the particular work of IF. Games that are meant for sheer hedonistic entertainment (such as "Lost Pig" and "Little Blue Men") are judged on this basis. Games that have aspirations (or the reputation) of being more artistic or literary will be judged accordingly--perhaps against the game designer's wishes, but it will be in accordance with the IF reviewing community (in my mind, some of the games of Victor Gijsbers and Emily Short; in the eyes of the IF community, this extends to games like Anchorhead).
A 5 is not indicative of an awe-inspiring work--as I write this, there would be no 5s according to this criteria. Instead of the sublime, a 5 is given to the best IF currently has to offer.
