The ecology of the waterways of Mars

About the Story

This short reference excerpt uses language and words from the Spiritualist novel "Journeys to the Planet Mars" (1903).

The original was purported to be transmitted psychically by the spirit medium Sara Weiss through automatic writing and drawing. It features rich worldbuilding and an extensive "Martian" language guide, some of which is quoted here.

Weiss's original drawings were in color, but could not be reproduced as such in the book. I hand-colored her images based on color clues in the novel and in contemporary interviews.

A companion biographical piece on Weiss and the novel's puzzlingly sincere plot can be found on my portfolio site as Journeys to the Planet Mars.

The ecology of the waterways of Mars by Liza Daly is marked with CC0 1.0.

Fascinating and beautiful exploration of a historical work, August 5, 2023

This game was written in 500 words or less for the Neo Twiny Jam.

This one was fun to read up on. I was just talking to my son a few days ago about 'automatic writing', where mediums would just let the pencil move and see what writing the spirits produced.

This game is about one such work, a long epic by Sara Weiss detailing the history, biology, and language of the people of Mars. It is accompanied by beautiful illustrations from the original text.

While the game itself provides fascinating insights, reading up on the accompanying material and just searching the original book in general was very fun.

An exploration of Martian Ecology, July 15, 2023

Using snippets and illustrations of the novel “Journeys to the Planet Mars” (1903), the author created a sort of database/paper on the ecology of a certain region of Mars. This entry is more of a muted one compared to the other submitted one, but it is quite beautiful in the way it has been formatted and edited.
