About the Story

Will you escape the nightmare, or will fear break your Will to Live?

You are trapped in an endless cycling nightmare of waking up and being killed by a shadow. Soon, you will achieve lucidity and will be able to control your thoughts, and the course of the nightmare.

Each time that you die, you come closer and closer to forfeiting your life. The only way to keep yourself going, is by thinking of the people you love...

Based on Eden Meridia's Cryptid Universe

Made for the Neo-Twiney Jam with the challenge of less than 500 words.

Controls and How to Play

Choices are slightly yellowed text. The game requires you to read carefully for any changes - hover your mouse over a word to see if it is a choice.

As you will learn on the first 3 cycles of the game, the game loops through the same nightmare. Once achieving lucidity, you can choose paths to discover a new "dying thought." Each unique dying thought will reveal something new in the next cycle of the nightmare.

Each time that you die, you lose your Will to Live. When you run out, you forfeit your life. To increase your Will to Live, you must remind yourself of an attachment to reality.

Note: Some things need two thoughts to have happened before being revealed.

Made using Twine (Snowman) and Krita

Complex coma nightmare loop game, July 30, 2023

This game was pretty hard to beat. It was written for the Neo Twiny Jam in 500 words or less.

At first, it seems extremely short, even on replay. But apparently you have to play 3 times before it changes, which is a bit weird.

It has images that were drawn on notebook paper and scanned, which I actually think look cool!

You have to explore different things in the coma, but you have little time due to constantly dying. Even worse, there's a counter in the corner and you fail the game completely once it ticks down, with no way to undo.

I eventually realized that (Spoiler - click to show)There's exactly one action that can be indefinitely be repeated to raise the counter. Overall, it was pretty tricky. I'm not sure I loved the counter of doom and the initial 3 replays, but it was interesting enough that I wanted to finish.

Escape your nightmare, July 15, 2023

While this is not the first entry of this jam to have an escape your nightmare concept, this one add an extra mechanic with the “Will to Live”. Depending on your actions, you may lose part of said will… and be consumed by the darkness. This was a neat little addition, giving more gravitas to the concept.
There is another layer to this nightmare, a reason for its existence in the first place. Thought you only discover it when you get closer to dispelling the nightmare…
Overall pretty neat and anxiety inducing game.

I liked the added illustrations too! And this was made in the Snowman format!
