About the Story

You get a text from someone you don't know. They say they've been kidnapped, and they need your help to escape. Do you trust them? Do they trust you? Will they make it out alive?

Subtext is an Alternate Reality Game (ARG). The game plays out in real time through actual text messages, phone calls, emails, etc. that you receive from characters. Along the way, you'll need to solve puzzles, break into systems, and use social engineering to unravel the story of a mysterious research facility and a person who found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Subtext is an Intriguing AR Mystery Game Told Through Text Messages
I loved how it freaked out my family and friends and how they encouraged me to stop playing it before it stole my identity or I was actually kidnapped. The mystery of it all is a welcome change to the regular and expected gaming format. It is definitely something that you aren’t likely to have experienced before and by the end of the game you’ll find yourself questioning what’s real and what’s part of the game.

Going Beyond the Text with the Subtext Game
Subtext taskes advantage of the low fidelity nature of the text messages that form the backbone of the story to create a more active immersion, and the experience has numerous moments of clever writing that makes it all too easy for players to fall into the conceit that they’re chatting with another honest to goodness person in need.

If you’re interested in learning more about Subtext, play the demo. Even if you don’t think you’re interested in the full experience, play the demo: it’s that good, and will help you decide whether the full game might be up your alley, at a negligible investment of time.
