Bland Parody, July 12, 2009

It's a three-point parody game. The humor is a send-up of romance novels and all their emotional pretentiousness, which is not exactly new stuff. The first room is a parody of a well-known adventure game, which also, isn't exactly new stuff, either. The revelation in the end about the gender of the main character is tired, as well. I guess I just didn't see anything really interesting or blow-me-away fantastic in this game. At least it's easy.

Am I missing something?, July 12, 2009

OK. Having read the only member review for this game, and having a soft spot for humorous IF, I was looking forward to this one, but I think I must be missing something. I just keep getting a 'you are lost in the woods' message, or words to that effect. I did manage on one occasion to get a humorous little description about a dozen words long, but only after wandering seemingly at random around the woods for what seemed like an eternity but was probably only a few minutes. I'm afraid if i'm being a little hasty in giving this one a bad review then i'm more than happy for somebody else to point out what i'm doing wrong and give me a gentle shove in the right direction. But until that happens continuously stating that 'you are lost in the woods' at every turn(literally!) just doesn't cut it for me. I had initially thought that I really was simply missing something obvious, so tried 'help' and 'hints' and even 'about' in a vain attempt to find out where I was going wrong, but no, no luck since they aren't implemented.

I hope somebody tells me what an idiot i'm being in missing the obvious and points me in the right direction, because the single, short description I did get showed signs of promise.

Anyway, i'll give it two stars for the moment, but am hoping to increase that if and when i'm able.

Oh, my love, my heart bleeds for you!, July 8, 2009

Quite simply: hilarious.

The humor comes not only from the 300+ word descriptions that occur during two actions, but from the prose and backstory. If you're the type of person who reads romance novels because the prose is hilariously purple, you should play this game.

There is actually some plot in this game. It's simple, but it exists, unlike one-turn joke games like "pick up the phone booth and aisle".

The one quibble I have with it is that the command "look around" doesn't work, so sometimes it's hard to know what direction to go in.
Likewise, if you type "N" and get lost in the forest, typing "S" does not get you back to your original location.
These two errors made me take off one star, but it's still damn funny.

Baf's Guide

A parody based on a Swedish company's attempt to start a commercial IF venture--their request for games, posted to the newsgroup rec.arts.int-fiction, stipulated, among other things that the game should have "at least 300 or more words at every long description such as GET KEY, OPEN DOOR." This is a tiny, very funny game fulfilling that requirement.
