(This review originally appeared as a blog post of mine during IFComp 2016.)

Imaginatively, a fractally projected world of toilets. Practically, a few rooms with basic bad implementation and IFComp rule jokes. Game comes in three versions (web version, Z-code, Glulx) if you download it. All appear identical.

One.

Not enough toilets, September 22, 2020

Toiletworld is a parser-based comedy / troll game made by "Chet Rocketfrak" for IFComp 2016. I spontaneously gave this game a try because I thought the title was too silly to pass.

The game begins inside the titular Toiletworld, seemingly a bizarre dimension with a fractal arrangement of toilets. Toilets within toilets down to an atomic level, most likely. Such surreal toilet-shaped wonders!

Unfortunately, it quickly becomes apparent that the game is little more than a throwaway joke at the expense of the player. The room texts are pointless and misleading, many directions are not listed, items have weird debug-names that are arduous to type, there are no puzzles or meaningful interactivity or an overarching goal to the game. Most insultingly of all, I couldn't find a single toilet that was actually implemented. While you can type "in" to go deeper in some rooms, that's just a regular room entrance and not a fully implemented toilet.

Some bad games become endearing through the effort that was put into them. There's no effort here. The game has a dire lack of amusing things, and a player who is planning on having the slightest bit of fun in Toiletworld really has their work cut out for them... although there is irony in the fact that a game named Toiletworld is completely bereft of toilet humor.

It's all just a cruel subversion of expectations, that's what it is. I suppose it's not saying much, but I really did expect more of Toiletworld. As it stands, this game is not worth dipping one's feet in. (Is this a toilet-related pun? I can no longer tell...)

If you're still planning on giving it a try, here's a small hint for dealing with the items: (Spoiler - click to show)type "take all" in each room instead of dealing with the hassle of the long item names. This also tells you if you can even pick up the items, as some of them are arbitrarily fixed in place to mock the player for even trying. You can also use "take all" to pick up the eight nameless items in the secret room to the north, not that they have a real use anywhere.

in which I break this game's perfect record, October 21, 2019

This is a blatant troll game, yes. But it's an excellent troll game, with a fair amount of care put into making sure that you can do what there is to do in the game--which is enter various toilets--and that you get to see the prose in it--which is full of self-conscious TODO notes, rooms named things like "FirstToiletFirstToiletFirstToilet," and sentences like "You can see mineral deposits on the walls, like the sort of mineral deposits that would result from years of flushing hard water with a mineral content at or above 0.5g/L, which is the typical sedimentary limit for residential water supplies."

Not on the level of Pick Up The Phone Booth and Die or Annoyotron, but a worthy addition to the troll genre.

A troll game, written in z-code, May 10, 2017

Z-machine games are less and less frequent each year, because Inform defaults to glulx. This comp still had several z-machine games though, but I'm not sure why.

Anyway, that means that the author of this game has probably had Inform for a while. Given that that's the case, this is a pretty disappointing troll game. There are only a couple of rooms, few items, etc.

Exactly What You'd Expect, November 18, 2016

I realized from the get-go that this was likely to go straight down the tubes, but I was vaguely intrigued by the promise of sophomoric triviality. I moved around a bit from toilet to toilet, came to the conclusion that there was nothing more to see here, and slapped a score on it. I was slightly amused so I gave it a 2/10. I don't even know how to use Inform 7 and I'm pretty sure I could have tossed this together in about 15 minutes. On the other hand, it appeared that the author continued to develop the game long after I had finished playing it. I think I could say that playing this game kind of made me feel like crap; so I guess in that respect, it was quite effective, even genius perhaps. Nah...

Here I sit, brokenhearted by a game which utterly failed to bowl me over. I only logged a few minutes before realizing there was squat to do; the author seems to have pooped out before adding most of the content, and what little he did manage to push out was pretty corny. The game is flush with mentions of toilets-within-toilets, like turduckens, and they appear in loo of any actual story, jokes, or puzzles.

In a word, it's shitty.
