Adventure Quest, by Mike Austin, Nick Austin, and Pete Austin
Old fashioned puzzle-fest, April 19, 2015
by NiMuSi (London, UK)

Adventure Quest may not meet the expectations we have of if today. For example, although it has a huge map, a lot of locations are padding; a staircase may consist of 5 locations when 2 could have been adequate (top and bottom), there are quite a few east-west and north-south passages which could have been shortened. Inventory management is also a challenge as you are limited to 4 items.

Despite all these shortcomings, this is still an immensely enjoyable game. and the reason for that are the puzzles. They are varied, there are plenty of them, and they all have satisfying solutions. I was stumped on quite a few occasions but that was never frustrating because when I finally figured out the solution, it was always logical. There are several different areas within the game, the transitions between them are handled in an interesting manner, contributing to the suspension of disbelief.

If you like old-school if where the emphasis is on the problem-solving, this will definitely be worth playing.

Ideal beginner's game, September 21, 2012
by NiMuSi (London, UK)

This is an ideal game for beginners, serving as a gentle introduction to IF. It has examples of most of the standard puzzles found in IF (using magical items, repairing machinery etc).

I thought all the puzzles were fairly straightforward for a beginner, apart from the very first one - how to get into the house. This may possibly deter newcomers from persevering with the game, which would be a great shame.

The player has a definite goal at each stage of the game, which means that they have something to concentrate on without any distractions following up red herrings (although the game also has those!)

The only minor niggle I have is the ending, (Spoiler - click to show)I was hoping for the eponymous Mrs Pepper to get her come-uppance.

Where are the Last Two Points?, March 24, 2008
by NiMuSi (London, UK)

This is an extremely satisfying dialog-driven game.

The puzzles fit seamlessly into the story, and are on the easy to moderate scale. These range from the perennial find-the-key to distract the animal to proceed.

There are three NPC's in the story, two of these are very well drawn. The dialog choices with them drive the narrative forward in a very nice and natural way.

I would have given this game four stars, but have given it three because of a slight niggle with the ending. All through the game you have quite definite objectives, but at the end it is not very clear how to finally finish. In the end I finished the game with 28 points and have been unable to get the final two points, even with the built in hints.

Near perfect puzzles, March 20, 2008
by NiMuSi (London, UK)

This is definitely the best non-cmmercial IF game I have played.

The writing is evocative and the puzzles are perfectly matched to the theme of the story. None of the puzzles are very difficult but neither are they completely straightforward. I consider only one puzzle to be slightly unfair - (Spoiler - click to show)the icefloes. I knew what I wanted to do but the location descriptions were a tad unclear, and I had to eventually consult the walkthrough for this. If it had not been for that I might have awarded 5 stars.
