News

The game page now has links to a new binary with a lot of bug fixes, smoother puzzles and a few added puzzles. I wanted to put in a lot of alternate ways through and clues.

There will be a third release. My testers found some good stuff I didn't have time for, and I have an idea for a new (non-puzzle) area which will be a sort of director's cut. I'll want to roll up the bugs and miscellaneous ideas there. But I wanted to get something stable in by the end of the year. And I have fixed a few hundred bugs and features since the original release.

There's too much to list here so I'll point people curious about just the changes to this document: https://www.dropbox.com/s/wffrnmaxklt1wx6/roiling_release_2_notes.txt (minor spoilers)

You can also play the new area by typing (Spoiler - click to show)ROVE OVER.

Thanks to the testers who helped along the way and also to David Welbourn's walkthrough which provided things to look at and fix. His reward for all his work is, his well-done walkthrough is now outdated! But it really spurred me to work at this game again after getting frustrated with making changes.

Emily Short's Interactive Storytelling
Spring Thing 2013: A Roiling Original
Like its predecessor, A Roiling Original is very thin story wrapped around puzzles dictated by the available concepts. The characters and environments are strongly surreal, with elements such as a wall made of paper, or a pit of seeds.

paean to wanderings
This is a sequel to the anagram-based wordplay game from IF Comp 2012 Shuffling Around, and delivers a very similar experience. Once again, it offers a good deal of brain-puzzly fun, but for my tastes there's not enough narrative or IF-gameplay-like content to distinguish it from a series of pen-and-paper anagram puzzles.

Great sequel to Shuffling Around, November 26, 2013
by streever (America)

The protagonist has run afoul of his new citizens after taking the throne in Shuffling Around. There are (very minor) tweaks to the gameplay, but this is still largely an anagrammers delight as you transform words into other words.

The story is still quite thin, which may disappoint more character-driven players, but the mechanics and prose are fun and engaging.

My main complaint about the first game--the ambiguity between the extra hint & the regular hint, and the inability to swap them mid-game--is reconciled in this version. You have a device which can switch at will between cheat/no-cheat mode.

In general, I found this game harder and less forgiving than the first; I didn't ever have to view help files for the first game, but sometimes had to consult them to complete Roiling Original.

I'd highly recommend this game to fans of the original and of anagrams. Have fun!

Games much improved in later versions by Karl Ove Hufthammer
Most IF works are only available in ‘version 1’, but some are released in updated versions. And a few see a large amount of bug fixing, rewriting and polish. This is a poll for highlighting these games, games that the authors have taken...

Games with interesting content that unlocks after beating the game by MathBrush
After playing Tenth Plague, I was interested when I saw the game had a commentary mode. I was looking for similar "extra content" in other games.

The most underrated game you've authored by Anya Johanna DeNiro
Interpret "under-rated" however that means to you. Perhaps it's one that's simply not played very much for whatever reason. Or it's a game you consider flawed but still worth playing, or an early effort that you are fond of.
