About the Story

The space team from Europe is very close to their designated target - the first manned exploration of Mars. But an accident strikes the team and one of the two shuttle pilots discovers that the red planet holds a secret far beyond his imagination. At last he reveals the true objective of his mission.

Ares won first place at the German interactive fiction Grand Prix 2010.

In Baltes Erstlingswerk Ares landet der Spieler als Teil der europäischen Marsmission Aurora im Jahre 2033 auf dem Alba Patera-Vulkan mit dem Ziel, die Marsoberfläche zu erkunden. Nach der holprigen Landung im Sandsturm beginnt die Erkundung mit der Entdeckung einer Höhle, die an ein altägyptisches Kammernlabyrinth erinnert. Diese offensichtlich von intelligenten Wesen geschaffenen Räumlichkeiten enthalten alles, was man für eine klassische Cave-crawl-Geschichte im Setting altägyptischer Pyramiden benötigt und führen den Spieler zur Entdeckung eines dunklen Geheimnisses der menschlichen Zivilisation. Wo es kein Weiterkommen gibt, hilft das Hinweissystem dezent weiter ohne allzu viel zu verraten.

Michael Baltes Spiel mit mehreren Ausgängen ist zu keiner Zeit langweilig und verrät an vielen Stellen seine Liebe zu Infocom-Spielen wie Steve Meretzkys »Planetfall« (1983), dem eine kleine Hommage in Form des Sicherheitsgewebes im Shuttle gewidmet ist. Viele der Rätsel stellen hohe Anforderungen an die Implementierung, die Baltes souverän gemeistert hat. Die Anlage der Hauptgeschichte als klassische Cave-crawl-Story mit aberwitzigen Fallenkonstruktionen ist Geschmackssache, das schmälert jedoch nicht den Gesamteindruck als profundes Textadventure, das zu den handwerklich besten deutschsprachigen überhaupt zählen dürfte.

What are some good games for people trying to learn another language? I imagine that short games with relatively simple prose and not too many non-standard commands (if they're parser games) would work best, but feel free to suggest...
