Death and Dissonance

About the Story

In 1935, 1945 and 1951, a tight-knit trio of weird, controversial composers all died spectacular deaths. The first died of blood poisoning, after a botched DIY surgery. The second was caught in the crossfire of a military sting in Ally-occupied Austria. And the third the eldest of the three died on exactly the day that an old soothsayer had predicted, years prior.

Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern and Alban Berg collectively known as the Second Viennese School may have been the three defining musicians of their time. CBC Music's interactive feature, Death and Dissonance, tells the story of how the early 20th century killed them all.

An interactive nonfiction canon?, September 23, 2015
by george (Seattle)
Take the time to at least start each composer's story, since the author changes approach and to a certain extent the affordances with each one (there's an especially nice interactive bit in Schoenberg). Overall I enjoyed the journalistic style though I felt Berg's part was too clever for its own good.

It looked great on mobile (Android Chrome) as well. Let's hear it for Twine nonfiction!

I originally rated this a 3 but considering the sum of its parts I think the 4 is well deserved.

"Sophie actually enjoyed the festival every year. She enjoyed the lights, the songs, and the crispness of the air. It was only the crowds that made her uneasy and drove her into the solitude she had learned to appreciate."
