I started out playing Colossal Cave, and then playing Scott Adams adventures hosted at The Source over an 110 baud acoustically coupled modem. Which doesn't make me quite as old as it sounds - I did that at my dad's radio stations as a little kid! Later, I spent way, way too long finishing Zork I with a perfect score and no walkthrough. I've been hooked ever since.

I really, really approve the new way of looking at what I always thought of as "adventure games" as "interactive fiction" - it sounds hokey and pretentious at first blush, but actually playing through some proves the truth of it. True IF beats a cave crawl every time.
