NPC-less Exploration - an IFDB Poll

Supposedly one of IFs strengths is for exploring places with few other people, often abandoned places, but I can't think of many works which have zero NPCs and consist of a lot of exploration. Usually there's at least one NPC, or the exploration might be quite limited (single room games for example). Can you help?

Yes indeed, and there could also games where you explore somewhere no one has ever been before which wouldn't count as abandoned either. The two essential criteria are exploration and no-NPCs, which often means abandoned, but not always.

My original comment is rendered moot by your edit, but your use of the term "supposedly" still rings on a false note, especially now that you've softened the terms.

Part of what's going on here is that exploration games in general have faded in response to the Comp, which tends to reward games with obvious, action-driving central narratives. (Which is kind of a shame, because exploring space is definitely one of the things that people talk about when they say what they like about IF, and is one of the very easiest things to implement.)

Bit of a tall order. Every large game I can think of has at least some NPCs that are guarding something, or have something you need to trade for. And even if there's no people whatsoever, there's bound to be animal NPCs.
