Missing Grandpa: Lost in Time, by Becky Kinkead

Not to Judge a Game by It's Cover, But..., April 10, 2012

Oddly, the cover (or image) caught me on this game. I thought it looked like it would be funny.

It wasn't.

Upon opening up the game, you find out that Grandpa is missing (hence the title) and for a moment it rang true of the Mulldoon Legacy.

That's about as far as the comparison's got. My frustrations began after the first paragraph (Spoiler - click to show) when you were told that there were notes on the table, yet you couldn't read them or interact wit them. There is a journal yet, you can't read it or examine it. All you are told is that there is no such thing.

The next problem came up when (Spoiler - click to show) after finding out that you can't read the notes, that the only way you can truly figure out a way to get through is by hitting the random directions of N,S,E,W, which did move you along.

After hitting the (Spoiler - click to show) east direction you find Grandpa younger making moonshine and I thought oh goody! Something good will happen! It turns out that (Spoiler - click to show) I was wrong. Whatever you say to Grandpa turns out to be related to you shutting up so he can make his moonshine.

Still feeling hopeful, I decided to hit the random directions again, and when I hit (Spoiler - click to show) south, I found a futuristic Grandpa. And I couldn't say anything to him or interact with him in any way

I decided at that point it wasn't worth continuing on. It doesn't seem like too much thought went into the game at all, which is tragic because, like I said, the cover looked like it would be funny.

Inspiration!, by Jacob Polar

Finding Inspiration, June 10, 2011

Initially, I was immediately captivated by the game. I can completely relate to the inability to get your creative juices going and I think just about anyone can relate to that feeling. The game isn't too complicated -- you have interactive fiction writer's block and you need to find some inspiration. Mostly, the puzzles come from being able to find out what will give you inspiration, and seeing how it's possible to interact with it. The good points about the game come from finding out the various inspirations around the house, such (Spoiler - click to show) the William Tell inspiration out in the front yard . The game isn't entirely difficult either, but the bad points in the game come from the fact that the puzzles are mostly guess the verb. For example, you can (Spoiler - click to show) examine the telephone, look at the telephone, but you can't use the telephone. Also, you go to the kitchen, the stove is there and you can only examine the stove. You can't use the stove or turn on the stove.

I felt like more could have been done to expand on the game although the author does mention that they spent a brief amount of time on creating the game. I gave this three stars because of the games potential and hope that the author goes back and expands more and takes a bit more time with the game.

Baby Uncle New Year, by Jonathan Blask

Quick, and sort of interesting, yet a little disappointing, June 10, 2011

Starting out the game, you play a guy that has had a really tough year and is really happy to be a brand new Uncle. In the game, you are getting your brand new nephew ready for the ceremony about to begin. Beyond that, not much else happens in the game. On the positive side, the writing, and the humor used in the game does show potential (Spoiler - click to show) especially the suddenly appearing payphone . But, potential isn't quite enough for me to give this game that good of a review.

As for the puzzles in the game, they are very easy and don't provide much of a challenge. I really think that much more could have been added to this game, especially with (Spoiler - click to show) Santa, the Delivery Guy, the Pay Phone, and even the two babies.

I think the game could be expanded a bit more, and expand beyond the ceremony or even give some background to the character. I would really encourage the creator of the game to expand more.

Or, maybe I'm not too big a fan of Speed IF?

(On a side note, to play the game: click on the link, click "save as" and save it to your desktop, and you can open it from there).

Murder at the Diogenes Club, by Gerald Lientz

Play for the writing., January 4, 2011

In this game, you play the role of Watson's cousin and Sherlock enlists your help with two cases that come up, which he can't help with (train to catch in the first, and the second he is a witness to the crime). Most of the game consists of you asking questions in the right way, using your observation skills, and other skills that are based on the points you give yourself at the start of the game. The part I enjoyed with this game was the writing. The puzzles are lacking a bit and seem to require trial and error, more than anything else. But the description, dialogue, and details of the crimes are very impressive and worth playing the game for. I would definitely play the next in the series. It does show a lot of potential and I would suggest it for the newbie.

Not bad...but could have been more..., August 19, 2010

I am a bit disappointed that this game didn't allow you to do more...I would have loved to have known what would have happened if the player was allowed to combat the bullys. A lot of insecurities going on that frustrated me.
